"Heels together, Toes apart.. Stomach in.. Shoulders broad." Most of us have heard these lines and been made to follow them at our Physical Training (P.T.) sessions back in our school times. Now that I reminisce those instructions and provide the same guidelines for the fitness enthusiasts at Bollyrobics class, I realise how blessed I was to learn the importance of a right posture from a young age.
The foundation of a dance or any exercise regime will not be strong enough unless and until the Right Posture is achieved and retained throughout.
I hear of many (and I feel disappointed that I do) mention (if not complain) pain and discomfort in their legs, back and especially knees once they begin any form of dance or fitness that involve cardio movements like bouncing and jumping. Yes, it is not a regular thing we do in our day to day lives, but to achieve the strength, stamina and mainly endurance once has to push self limits. Let's not forget, cardio also releases endorphins in our body.. and these happy hormones are the best medicine you can rely on in your stressful lifestyle :)
So no.. Do Not say NO to exercising .. but do get the right posture..
I'm going to repeat:
Stomach in.. shoulders broad
Heels together .. toes apart
And : KNEES SOFT!!
The axis in your body, feel it.. feel it puling you tall. Do not lock your knees. Let your thigh muscles act like a shock absorber to withstand the movement.
Do begin your exercise by warning up your body.. stretch.. feel the muscles.. get them ready for a session your body will thank you for :)
Also do see some basic steps of dance covered .. use them on any track.. let me know how you feel dancing :)
PS: this 'post' left you with a right 'post'ure :)
